Presence Church Beliefs

Our beliefs underpin who we are and why we exist. They guide how we achieve our mission and keep us focused on our unique call God has given us as a local church.

One God: Three Persons

There is only one true God.  He is creator, redeemer, and eternal king of all that is in heaven and earth.  He is the full expression of love yet is equally and perfectly holy and just. The one God is three persons.  Scripture reveals the united and equal triune God and the perfect relationship between the three persons of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and their role in the salvation of mankind.

(Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 43:10-11; John 5:18; Ephesians 4:4-5; 1 Peter 1:2; 1 John 5:7)

Father God: The "I Am"

The Father is the eternal self-existent “I AM”, the creator of Heaven and Earth.  He is the creator and redeemer of all mankind.  He has revealed Himself fully to mankind in the person of Jesus, His Son.  Man was created in and redeemed for His glorious image.

(Genesis 1:26; Exodus 3:14; Luke 3:22; John 14:9)

Jesus: Son, Saviour & Redeemer

The Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God (1 John 5:20) and is the image of the invisible God, the “I AM” (Colossians 1:15; John 8:58), bearing the fullness of the Father’s glory (Colossians 1:9) and is the fullness of the Godhead (Colossians 2:9) The Word of God reveals His virgin birth (Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:31; Luke 1:35), His sinless life (Hebrews 7:26; 1 Peter 2:22), His miracles (Acts 2:22; Acts 10:38), His substitutionary work on the cross (1 Corinthians 15:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21), His bodily resurrection from the dead (Matthew 28:6; Luke 24:39; 1 Corinthians 15:4), and His exaltation to the right hand of God.

(Acts 1:9; Acts 1:11; Acts 2:33; Philippians 2:9-11; Hebrews 1:3)

Humanity was created in the beauty of glory and in perfect union with the Father.  But by their freewill disobedience, they fell short of the glory of God and the only hope of redemption is in Jesus Christ the Son of God.

(Genesis 1:26-31: 3:1-7; Romans 3:23-27; 5:12-21)

Man’s only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God. Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, man becomes an heir of God, according to the hope of eternal life (Luke 24:47; John 3:3; Romans 10:13-15; Ephesians 2:8; Titus 2:11; Titus 3:5-7). The inward evidence of salvation is the direct witness of the Spirit (Romans 8:16). The outward evidence is a life of righteousness and true holiness, being led by the Spirit of Christ.

(Romans 8:14; Ephesians 4:24; Titus 2:12)

Holy Spirit: Co-equal, Co-eternal, Co-existent

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead. He is co-equal, co-eternal and co-existent with the Father and with the Son (1 Thessalonians 4:8). His ministry upon the earth is to convict (John 16:8) and lead man to Christ (John 15:26).  To the believer, He is to be the comforter; counsellor; helper; intercessor; advocate; and empower to the Church. (John 14:26 AMP)

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire is a gift from God as promised by the Lord Jesus to all believers and is received following (and is distinct from) the experience of New Birth. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service that includes the imparting of spiritual gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry.

(Luke 24:29; Acts 1:4; 1:8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31).

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is to empower the believer to be a witness of Jesus Christ through the preaching and demonstration of the Gospel with power and authority (Matthew 28:18-19; Acts 1:8). The gifts of the Holy Spirit are ongoing evidence of this experience. Whereas there is one initial Baptism of the Spirit, there are many subsequent infillings. (Acts 2:4, 4:31)

The Bible: Inspired, Infallible & Living

The Bible is the inspired Word of God, a living and active revelation from God to mankind, the infallible rule of faith and conduct, and is superior to conscience and reason, but not contrary to reason.

(2 Timothy 3:15-16; Hebrews 4:12; 1 Peter 2:2)

The Church: Body, Habitation & Ambassador

The Church is the body and the fullness of the Head that is Christ.  It is the habitation of God through the Spirit, revealing the manifold wisdom of God in the Heavenlies, as well as being earthly ambassadors for the fulfilment of the great commission. Each believer born of the Spirit, is an integral part of the Church, whose names are written in Heaven.

(1 Corinthians 12:12; 2 Corinthians 5:17-20; Ephesians 1:22-23; 2:22; 3:10-11; 1 Peter 2:5)

The Church is divinely called and anointed to function with the threefold purpose of leading the Church in reconciling the world to the Father through Jesus (Mark 16:15-20, 2 Corinthians 5:18); the worship of God (John 4:23,24); and the edification and equipping of the body to the full stature of the glorified Christ as the pillar and ground of truth. (Ephesians 4:11-16; 1 Timothy 3:15)

Salvation: Justification

Salvation comes by faith alone in the atoning work of Christ. We uphold the truth that salvation does not come by works but by grace for good works.  It is a gift given freely and is received through the empowering grace of the Spirit of God.

(1 Corinthians 6:11; Galatians 2:16-1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Titus 3:8).

Salvation: Sanctification

Without holiness no man can see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14). We believe in the Doctrine of Sanctification as a definite, yet progressive work of grace, initiated at the time of regeneration and continuing until the consummation of salvation at Christ’s return.

(I Thessalonians 5:23; 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Philippians 3:12-14; Titus 3:5)

Salvation: Glorification

The work of salvation in the life of the redeemed is completed on the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.  As we behold the returning glorified Christ, we are transformed into the full state of His glory.  At the final destruction of the Kingdom of darkness, redeemed humanity will be eternally united and will reign in the fullness of the Lord Jesus Christ’s glory, bringing to completion the eternal salvation plan revealed in the Garden of Eden.

(Genesis 3:15; Philippians 3:20-21; Colossians 3:4; Revelation 22:4-5)

Finished works of the cross: Forgiveness

Forgiveness and freedom from sin is provided through faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ. The grace for freedom from sin and its eternal consequence comes through the repentant heart confessing, relying on His grace to appropriate the benefit of His new covenant.

(Psalm 103:3; Matthew 26:28; Ephesians 1:7; Colossians 1:14; 1 John 1:9)

Finished works of the cross: Healing

Deliverance from physical sickness is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of all believers to receive and minister.

(Psalm 103:3; Isaiah 53:4-5; Matthew 8:16-17).

Finished works of the cross: Deliverance

The power of the Kingdom of darkness is broken through the sacrifice of Christ, who became a curse on a tree removing the power of sin and its consequences and strongholds.  As a new creation in Christ Jesus, believers have the authority and power of Christ to live free from and destroy the oppression of the works of darkness.

(Isaiah 61:1; Galatians 3:13-14; Colossians 2:13-15; 1 John 3:8/John 14:12)

Baptism

As Head of the Church, the Lord Jesus Christ implemented a clear commandment to baptise new believers by full immersion. It is for all believers. This holy sacrament identifies the believer with Jesus in His death, burial, and resurrection into a new life.

(Matthew 28:19; Acts 10:47-48; Romans 6:3-4; Acts 20:21; Hebrews 10:22; 1 Peter 3:21)

Communion

The ordinance of Communion is the second commandment of the Lord Jesus that must be received consistently until His return. Only believers can come to the Table of the Lord, which consists of the bread and the cup. The bread is symbolic of His body, which was broken for us. The cup is symbolic of His blood that was shed for us. Both elements declare the power of the New Covenant and its working of eternal life in the believer as well as prophetically decreeing the assured hope of the resurrection of the saints at the return of Christ.

(John 6: 54; 1 Corinthians 11:26)

Return of Christ

At His ascension, the apostles were told Jesus would return the same way. Scripture teaches Jesus will return not to deal with sin but to bring completion of salvation to those who wait on Him.  At the second coming, the righteous dead will be raised and will meet Him as He descends in His glory.  The Lord will return for a spotless bride, the Church, and she is to eagerly wait and join the Spirit in declaring “come” that they may enter the place prepared by Him.

(John 14:1-3; Acts 1:10-11; Philippians 3:20; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 9:28; Revelation 19:7-9, 22:17)

Resurrection

The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation, together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord, is the imminent and assured hope of the church.

(1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; Titus 2:12; 1 Corinthians 15:51-52; Romans 8:23)

Judgement

There will be a final judgment in which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works at the Great White Throne. Whosoever is not found written in the Book of Life, together with the devil and his angels, the beast, and the false prophet, will be consigned to everlasting punishment in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone. This is the second and eternal death (Revelation 19:20; Revelation 20:10-15).The saints of God will face the Judgement Seat of Christ.  The judgement of sin has already been made at the appropriation of the blood of Jesus at conversion.  This judgement is based on our works post salvation.  The fruitfulness of our lives will be judged and determines the measure of reward believers receive on entering eternity.

(Luke 18:11-27; 1 Corinthians 3:9-15; 2 Corinthains 5:10, Revelation 22:12)

Prophetic Promises: Redemption of Israel & Millenium Reign

The salvation of national Israel, and the Millennial reign of Christ on earth is promise in scripture.  It is the hope of the world and the culmination of the Lord’s covenant with Abraham.

(Romans 11:26-27; Galatians 4:28; 2 Thessalonians 1:17; Revelation 19:11-14; Revelation 20:1-7)

CREEDS

The Apostle's Creed

used as preparation for baptism, the early church developed a summary of the key principles of faith required for salvation and entering a new life through and in Christ.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic (worldwide) Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

The nicene creed

The Nicene Creed was adopted at the Council of Nicaea in AD 325 by first century bishops.  It is a more in-depth declaration of faith of the Apostles’ Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit He became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day He rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

Amen.
